Concert Orchestra 10/4/11

We are about two weeks away from our concert.  Where do we stand? In class, we recorded each of our concert pieces, without stopping.  This will give us a snapshot of where we are and what we need to do in order to have the best performance possible.

Assignment: Listen to the audio files, then make constructive comments.  This self-assessment can help everyone learn and understand where we need to go from here.

Notes:  Your comments should be SPECIFIC.  General comments like “good” or “bad” are not helpful.  Please mention specific measure numbers when commenting.  For instance, “At measure 35, violins could have played louder,” or “I really think that cellos had excellent intonation on their melody at measure 65.”

  1. Have your sheet music and a pencil handy to reference.
  2. Listen to the audio (see links below)
  3. Make comments for each piece using the “comment” link below.

  1. Brandenburg : slowed down in the middle of the song
    Not together at all …
    No open E’s
    Ending sounds rough !

Autumn vows : cellos need better sound in beginning
    Not steady
Middle sections need to be heard, not just a bunch of notes jumbled
    Before c sounds rough..
    Several intonation issues.
the end just kinda .. Happened …

    Duffys cut :
Beginning needs a lot of work
The jig sounds messy…not together in the middle sections
2nds at the Lament part sound out of tune
    Firsts, work on 3rd position
    Nobody is together ……!!

  2. I think we can do a lot better than this! We sound like it’s our first time playing these pieces. A lot of room for improvement.
& WHERE ARE THE VIOLAS?? I never hear us :'(

The Legend of Duffy’s Cut-1st measure we need to work on starting together, 5th there needs to be more 1st violins need to be louder. Measure 11 needs to start all together and end together were all playing at different paces. 27-34 measure togetherness don’t speed up and learn notes. Measures 43-61 need to be together and it would really help if people learned notes. Measure 65-82 needs allot of work when starting together and keeping the whole group together, we sounded not together and really off tempo.
Autumn Vows- Beggining needs to be together and a strong beginning. Measure A-C needs to be in tune, have more 2nd and be together.
Brandenburg Concerto No.5-The group needs to start together not speed up or slow down. Measure 13-15 needs to be together and in tune. Measure 17 there needs to be more 1st violins louder, in tune and together. Measure 21 needs to be fast together and need to know notes. Measure 23 needs to be more violin. Need to know fast parts and stay together. Measure 33 2nd’s need to take slurs slow and fix intonation. Measure 50 since its fast needs to be in tone and have to learn notes in order to be able to play it. Ending in the end needs to be together. HAVE TO WORK ON BEING IN TUNE AND STAYING TOGETHER! LEARN THE NOTES!

    • This can be a valid assessment… but if the songs were good, how were they good? Let’s give some specific examples of what went well… for example, “The 2nd violins were in tune at measure 37″ or “good strong tone quality at bar 66″. Check out some of the other comments on this page for ideas on formatting the comments and giving more specifics.

  4. The beginning of brandenburg was really strong, but by measure 17, THE EIGHTH NOTES ARE DESTACHED!!! I heard many F narps. Throughout the piece, there are no changes in the key signature!!! We really just need to practice the last line, 1sts…. cellos were EXTREMELY solid!! 😀 high three’s were also an issue. But if we keep trying our HARDEST, we’ll get this piece!!!

  5. we arent together!!!! cellos!! I couldnt really hear the violins!! Violins!! HIGH THREES!!!! Mostly togetherness…. We’re a family, and if we have people speeding up (I did, I won’t lie), then the whole family looks, well, bad. Measure 5, firsts….. LOW TWO!! Measure 21, it goes from quiet to forte, which we did well, but as we did, we sped up. Its comming along, but I don’t think it should sound like we’ve just learned it yestorday. I know its a slow piece, and the other two are more fast, but this is still one of the pieces that we will play. please practice your hardest!

  6. :O wow. um, well it was good, but this is an insanely fun piece to play!!! 99, firsts, we need to be extra strong!! the fingering for third on the E string is the same for the A string, what I would do is stay in third for the B on the A string, then come back for the F. The beginning was not together. remember!! BA-NAN-A!!! long SHORT long!! 91 to the end wasn’t together, I dont want Mr. Riegel to have to snap his fingers for us to be together. He’s moving more than we are. Play loud and proud!! My solo, of course needs A LOT of work, and I need to practice this piece more often, but I hate it when someone works really hard, and all they get from everyone else is “I’ll practice later.” sorry for being mean….. 😀

  7. BRANDENBURG- 2nd violins were barely audible at measure 37
AUTUMN- i couldn’t hear 2nd violins until measure A, but none of us were together and we were all off beat.
Duffy (FAVORITE)- at 11 none of us were together, at 73 again, we weren’t together, and i couldn’t hear 2nd violins much.

  8. Bradenburg- WE need to be better in tune. Listen to the notes when we play them. We were not together in the beginnging. c#!!!!! NO open a’s for violas, close the open strings up. Dont rush measure 37. Sections with moving parts need to play louder. 1st violins shouldnt rush at the end. take a deep breath. and follow Mr. Reigel.
Autumn Vows- We need to work on being more togther and feeling the music. Violas, make sue our b is on the 1st beat of the 2nd measure, not 4th beat of 1st measure. Letter A was togther, play out if you hav ethe melody. Watch notes at d cellos. pay attentionto key changes. Watch at e, we got off. F naural at Ltter F. Thats why its called F and not letter F sharp.
Duffy- Dont get behind at 11 to 27. Pay attention to rythems. The railroad part starte dout sounding really ncie. Dont rush at 55. We ned to watch and start togethre at 65. Pay attention to rythems at 75. Cello and bass’s notes at 82. Be more flowy at 83-110. Dont rush violas.

  9. Brandenburg- it was good and somewhat together but the C sharps were a little flat.
Autumn- we were not together but we ended well.
Legend of Duffys Cat- we were together throughout the piece but the 2nd violins need to be louder.

  10. Brandenburg Concerto NO.5- Begining was very good. Need to work on 3rd fingers in measure 2 and 9. G sharp in measure 58 could be in tune more. Measure 50 was not very smooth and together.
Autumn Vows- The 2nd measure is not together. In measure 24 and 40 low 2 was not in tune. Part E was not together. Measure 51 to 55 was great. Low 1s in measure 62 was off.
The Legend of Duffy’s Cut- Measure 2 pizz. were nicely together. Measure 27 wasn’t loud enough in the viola section. Measure 59 to 61 was not together both times. Measure 65 to 82 is not loud enough. Measure 81 was not in tune including 3rd fingers.

  11. on Brandenburg we sounded off in most places we weren’t together and in some places we were going too fast of too slow and it didn’t sound right

on Autumn Vows we were so off in the beginning and then it got better the sharps and natural were really off and we weren’t together at all but it sound good in some place in the middle

on Legend of Duffy’s cut in the beginning the first were off then it got better but we weren’t together the in the middle we sped up and some people weren’t going the same pace as everyone else

  12. Brandenburg:
-Measure9: 2nds and violas need to play more loudly. i can hardly hear them.
-Measure13: 2nds need to use 4th finger, not open.
-Measure17: 1st sound out of tune and not together on the first couple notes.
-Measure21: The 2nds don’t understand the rhythm at that tempo
-Measure25: 2nds need to use 4th finger, not open
-Measures33-37: I can’t hardly hear the notes being played and 2nds don’t know the rhythm at that tempo and also they need to play more louder.
-Measure46: 1st sound out of tune and not together.
-Measure65-66: 2nds sound like they don’t even know their part.
-Measure82-83: the c sharps are out of tune.
    – The last two measures are not together.

    Autumn Vows:
-The whole orchestra does not sound together.
    – In the begining the 1st don’t sound together or in tune
-MeasureA: The 2nds and the Violas need to play louder.
-Measure21: 2nds sound out of tune and not together and the first sound really out of tune.
    Measure24: sounds out of tune
Measure40-41: sound out of tune and we need to be little louder.
-when we are suppose to speed up you can’t tell that we were speeding up .
    -Measure58-59: sounds out of tune
-H to the end sounds not together and out of tune.

    Duffys cut:
    – In the begging the 1st were out of tune
    – At 11 we were all not together and we were out of tune
    – at 27 2nds need to be louder
-when the trembleo comes they need to be softer.
-in the Railroads begin some spots need to be a little louder.
    – at the jig the 1st were out of tune and louder. also we all need to be together.
-at 83 you can tell that there is no cresendo or decresendo is happening in the 2nds. Also the 1st are out of tune and not together.

  13. Brandenburg- The beginning needs to be more together and each section should sound more distinct. around measure 17, high 3’s are off. Can’t hear viola’s at 50. Violins need to play stronger at melody. Bass’ louder. Ritardando at the end was pretty good. 70 to 81 could use some improvement in keeping the notes sharp and together.
Autumn Vows- didn’t start together. Beginning isn’t together as a group. A to B is pretty good. Beginning of B was a little out of tune. Violins and cellos passed melody well at C. Harmony should be slightly louder at D. 5 after D needs to be much more together. E, speeding up needs work, not together. Didn’t start the end of 4 measures after F together.G was out of tune. H started off but then came together.
Duffy- Violins out of tune at beginning. Plucking isn’t together. Viola’s and Vilins need to be louder at 27. Bass and Viola need to be louder at 39. 47 is pretty good, sounds neat. Accent more at 55 on the beginning of each set of 4 eighth notes. 65 is very not together. Ritardando at 80 is off. Bass out of tune at 82. Viola’s need to work on intonation at 87. Violins are quiet, louder. Also not totally in tune. Work on transition and togetherness at 99. melody louder at 107.

  14. Brandenburg Concerto No. 5:
    I. Measure 3
    a. Cello’s and Basses need to watch their F sharps.
    II. Measure 10
    a. Cello’s, good dynamic contrast.
    III. Measure 17
    a. Violins at measure 17 need to watch their high notes.

    Autumn Vows:
    I. First several measures
    a. Cello’s need to keep up a steady tempo.
    b. Watch intonation.
    II. Measure 18
    a. Cello’s, the A’s, and G’s are very out of tune.

    Legend’s of Duffy’s Cut
    I. Measure’s 2-5
    a. Violin’s need to watch intonation, and keep a steady tempo.
    II. Measure 11
    a. Either Cello’s are rushing pizzicato, or the Violin’s are not keeping up.

  15. I think that all of the pieces were alright. I thought our best by far though was Brandenburg Concerto #5, and we need the most work on Autumn Vows. In Duffys i think we are doing alright but in measure 35 we start not being together. I think in all of our pieces our biggest struggle is just staying together and making the crushendos stand out. I think that if we just work really hard this week and do more practicing then just rehearsels, we’ll be in good shape, because we know the notes we just have to add more emotion to the songs!

  16. Autumn Vows-
The whole first line was out of tune it didn’t flow well together, for 2nds measure 16 was out of tune the half notes G was pretty bad, i also think measures 21-23 were all over the place and not really in tune but we did well with our dynamics there, but i actually think the melody sounds really pretty and flows nice
    Brandenburg Concerto NO.5-
Measures 13 & 14 were out of tune along with the whole 5th line, it was really out of tune and strung out everywhere, in measure 41 the G# was awful, and i fell like 2nds are rushing the quarter notes where they are detached.
    The Legend of Duffy’s Cut-
Measures 11-18 were awful it was out of tune and seems like everyone just threw fingers down, measures 27-34 were played pretty well, the railroad section sounds better on the audio recording than in person we did a lo0t better then i thought we did on that section except the second ending was kind of bad and out of tune

Best Song: The Legend of Duffy’s Cut
Song Needing Most Work: Brandenburg Concerto NO.5

  17. Ethan Mullet
Brandenburg- in the first 5 measures the first violins need to play much louder. The cellos and basses were very over powering through the whole song. Violins need to play all of their quarter notes detached.
Autumn- we started together very well but after the first bar until letter A we weren’t together. When the seconds get the melody they really need to play louder. The violins were rushing through the entire middle of the song and need to watch the conductor more. At E we need to stay together better. We did manage to end together.
Duffy- We were a little slow at the beginning and when we got to A the violins didn’t stay together. I think we did a good job on the crescendo at 47 but the cellos might need to use a little less weight on their bows. Right before 65 we were not together. When it got to the end it was just a disaster, people were on different measures and we just never could get it back together.

  18. Autumn Vows:
We need to get things in tune and some of us gettting ahead. It also seems like some of us don’t know the notes. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done!

    Brandenburg Concerto No. 5:
Get the G#’s in tune a little, more divided half notes, and we had a little trouble changing back from G# to G natural. Getting a little better at staying together, we just need to work more on the notes.

    The Legend of Duffy’s Cut:
It was Tuesday, not Monday. The violins were a little out of tune at the beginning, and so were the cellos a little. The cellos and violins weren’t really together at measure 11. We could’ve put more accents on the notes at “The Railroad Begins.” At the beginning of 83, the cellos were WEAK!!! Can’t skip notes, or it won’t be the same!

  19. Duffy’s Cut- Beginning: the Gnaturals that the 1st have sounded like narps.
M.11-19: not together at all. M.27:can’t really hear the staccatos that 2nds and cellos have. M.48,50,52,54,58: people not knowing notes makes this not together, and sounds really… weird. M.73-83:2nds aren’t reaching high enough with their C#’s.
Autumn Vows: The beginning sounds like the right notes aren’t being played. The sound it’s supposed to make is off. M.10: the long F# for 2nds needs to be louder. M.15: the second half of the measure is not heard from seconds. Needs to be played louder. At E everyone is not together. And at G the notes are still being messed up by 2nds.
Brandenburg: That piece sounded great! Everyone stayed together! I tried following with the 2nds part, and I was having trouble because we didn’t play loud enough. The only thing for this piece is to play louder.

  20. Bradenburg – Eigth notes were not together at measure 17, last couple of measures could be more together

Autumn – 2nd violins need to play louder during there melody, Violins need to start together

Duffy – At A the violins need to stay together, 2nd violins need to play louder

  21. Bradenburg- we have to work on high 3’s and low 1’s.

Duffy- Staying together at 0-27 and at 87.

Autumns- At the start, we could use some work staying together and better intonation.

  22. All of the pieces need more improvement in intonation, tempo, and dynamics. Although large sections of the pieces were not how they should be, there are some specific examples that can be improved:
In Legend of Duffy’s Cut, during the first five measures, first violins aren’t as loud as they should be and there are some intonation and sharp(s) problems. Also, around measure 11-12, cellos seem to be rushing their pizzicato notes.
In Brandenburg Concerto No.5, near the beginning (around measure 3), Cellos and Bases need to improve their intonation, especially the F sharps. Also, violins have to pay closer attention to their high notes (first violins in particular) in measure 17.
In Autumn Vows, the orchestra was not together in the first few measures. Many second violins were either slightly early or behind the rest of the group which in turn caused other groups to fall behind as well. Also, around measure 18, cellos need to improve their intonation greatly, especially the A’s and G’s.
