Time flies—already we have our first concert and pasta dinner under our belt (so to speak!), and the year is very much in full swing. Only 3 weeks until our annual Celebration Concert! Updates follow:
Darby Celebration Concert December 5 and 6
The Darby High School Performing Arts Department will present our annual Celebration Concert on Wednesday, December 5 and Thursday, December 6 in the Darby Performing Arts Center. Both performances begin at 7:00 pm. This concert is an annual showcase of all the Darby music programs, with performances by all our bands, choirs, and orchestras. Students should report no later than 6:30 pm to change into formal uniform, report to their warmup site and tune and warm up for the performances. Students are reminded to check the Orchestra Handbook for formal uniform requirements (including formal shoes, etc.). There is one dress rehearsal on Tuesday, Dec. 4 beginning at 2:45 pm in the PAC; this is a required event for all orchestra members also.
Both performances are free and open to the public—we hope you can join us! We suggest audience members plan to come early, as both nights tend to fill up!
Plans are well underway for the Darby bands and orchestras to travel to Orlando, Florida during Spring Break. The orchestra will participate in the Disney “You’re Instrumental!” music workshop. Students will work with Disney staff in one of Disney’s recording studios and experience firsthand what it is like to be a recording musician for Disney. The session will conclude by the students recording a brief soundtrack to a Disney animation. Parents, there is still time (and space) if you would like to travel with us as a chaperone. Please contact Mr. Riegel for more information!
Congratulations Region Orchestra Members!
Once again, Darby is well represented in this year’s Ohio Music Education Association South-Central Region Orchestra. Violinists Hannah Lee, Jinsoo Lee, violist Kerry Callander, bassist Samantha Turner, and flutist Andrea Crickard were all selected for this year’s orchestra. The Orchestra will meet and rehearse this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, and perform in concert Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 PM at Gahanna Lincoln High School. Dr. Louis Bergonzi, professor of music at the University of Illinois, will conduct a program that includes works by Copland and Bizet. The concert is free and open to the public. Students were selected through a competitive audition process that included the top high school musicians from all over Central and South Central Ohio. Well done, Darby musicians!
Senior violist Kerry Callander has once again been selected for membership in the Ohio All-State Orchestra, an honors orchestra comprised of the top high school musicians throughout the state of Ohio. Kerry earned this honor through his audition for the South Central Region Orchestra. The All-State Orchestra will perform at the General Session of the Ohio Music Education Association State Professional Development Conference in Columbus Friday, February 8, 2013 at 2:00 pm.
This year’s Pasta Dinner and Concert was a rousing success—thanks to your support, our orchestras performed for a capacity crowd and had a very successful dinner fundraiser! I am so proud of our student musicians in both orchestras– congrats on a GREAT performance! Special thanks to Mrs. Morris for coordinating our awesome crew of parent volunteers form Heritage and Darby, and Aramark staff. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you also to all parents who helped with the dinner, whether it was to help serve, donate a dessert, or take tickets. Your support is key to our success!
