Darby Orchestra eNewsletter #1, August 27, 2012

Welcome back! I hope all of you had a great summer, with time to relax, travel, and spend time with family and friends. Only a week into the school year, we are off to a busy start! I am very excited about the playing level of both groups and what the coming year in orchestra has in store. This being the first newsletter of the year, there is much new information to share. Please read on!

New assistant director/ HMS orchestra director

It is my pleasure to welcome Mrs. Sara Given to the Hilliard Orchestra staff and the Darby/Heritage family. Prior to teaching in Hilliard, Mrs. Given was a middle school orchestra director for the New Albany Plain-Local Schools. She also taught in the Centerville City Schools near Dayton as an elementary, middle, and high school director.  Mrs. Given earned her Master’s Degree in String Music Education with an emphasis in String Pedagogy from The Ohio State University; she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education from Ohio University.

Mrs. Given currently serves as the conductor of the Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestras, Junior Strings as well as Master Teacher for The Ohio State University String Project, a program designed to provide under-served student populations in the greater Columbus area access to string music education. She also maintains a private studio of violin and viola students and performs with local orchestras. Welcome, Mrs. Given!

Open House

This Wednesday, August 29, Darby High School opens its doors to all families and students of Darby for our annual Open House. There will be a presentation at 6:00 pm for freshman parents, with all parents able to follow an abbreviated version of their child’s class schedule beginning at 7:00 pm. I look forward to seeing you during your student’s orchestra period!

Instrument info, Sheet Music

We are off and running in our rehearsal schedule for our fall spaghetti dinner and concert, slated for Oct. 23. All students should now have instruments, music and other required materials in class each day. Parents, look for the instrument and music to come home most weekdays and on weekends; the students do have music to practice! Also, be aware that students have been issued storage lockers for their instruments, and are expected to keep all items locked and secured when not in use to discourage theft and tampering. Hilliard Darby High School, and the orchestra directors, do not assume any liability for lost or stolen instruments or other equipment. Please “play it safe” and keep lockers locked!

Students have been issued a folder of sheet music for our first concert; students, please remember this music is on loan and must be returned in the same condition in which it was issued to you (light, neat pencil marks to mark bowings, tempos, etc. are fine). Keep your music in your folder when not in use; please keep track of your music!

Our calendar of events is listed on the right sidebar of this website, and is also included in the handbook.
